The Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal passes through this part of the Stour valley. Its southern reaches are associated with sandstone scenery as well as boating. A canal-side outing offers a different focus from the high ground: bridges, moored boats and the small details of a working waterway.
Choose a clear turning point
For a casual visit, decide on a turning point before you start and keep track of the return journey. Do not assume that an appealing path joins up into a short loop. Consult local walking information and a current map for the exact access point; this article does not provide turn-by-turn directions.
Check the towpath as well as the map
Look for current Canal & River Trust notices before a longer outing. Towpath surfaces and widths can vary, and a canal route is not automatically suitable for every wheelchair or pushchair. Stay attentive around the water and give other users room. Keep children close rather than making the waterside the place for a running game.
Make it one part of the day
